STP 31-18-SM-TG , Soldiers Manual and Trainiers Guide, CMF  18, SF Common Skills, SL 3 and 4

  dated Oct 2003

This soldier training publication (STP) is for all soldiers holding military occupational specialties (MOSs) in career management field (CMF) 18, their trainers, and first-line supervisors. It contains standardized training objectives (in the form of task summaries) used to train and evaluate soldiers on critical tasks that support unit missions during wartime and peacetime operations.

Noncommissioned officers (NCOs) holding CMF 18 MOSs should have access to this publication. Trainers and first-line supervisors should ensure its availability in the soldiers’ work area, unit learning center, and unit libraries. They should actively plan for soldiers to have easy access to this publication. However, there is no requirement that each soldier holding an MOS in CMF 18 be provided an individual copy.

All tasks in this manual are applicable to the Active Army and Reserve Component (RC) soldiers.

Introduction

1-1. General. This soldier’s manual (SM) identifies the individual critical common tasks for all soldiers in CMF 18. The ability to successfully perform these basic tasks is essential to the survival of each SF soldier and operational detachment and the success of each mission. Commanders, trainers, and soldiers should use this manual with the Soldier’s Manuals of Common Tasks (SMCTs) (STPs 21-1-SMCT, Soldier’s Manual of Common Tasks Skill Level 1, and 21-24-SMCT, Soldier’s Manual of Common Tasks [SMCT] Skill Levels 2-4), Army Training and Evaluation Programs (ARTEPs), and Field Manual (FM) 25101, Battle Focused Training, to establish effective training plans and programs that integrate soldier, leader, and collective tasks.

The Army’s mission is to mobilize and deploy units trained to accomplish wartime missions. Successful mission accomplishment requires emphasis on individual training. Individual training must focus on performance under the conditions and to the standards expected in wartime. This STP identifies the individual training requirements common for all soldiers in CMF 18. It is designed to be used by commanders, trainers, and soldiers to plan, conduct, and evaluate individual training in units. This manual is the primary reference to support that portion of the Individual Training Evaluation Program (ITEP) requiring commanders to routinely evaluate a soldier’s ability to perform MOS-specific tasks critical to the unit’s mission. Army Regulation (AR) 350-41, Training in Units, describes the ITEP in detail.

Task summaries contain information necessary to conduct training and evaluate soldier proficiency on tasks critical to the MOS. A separate task summary is provided for each critical task. These task summaries are, in effect, standardized training objectives that ensure soldiers do not have to relearn a task upon assignment to a new unit.
